We live in a continually evolving society. This evolution can be seen every time a faster and smarter cell phone is released or a newly redesigned car model hits the streets.

Often times, the most obvious form of this evolution appears through the advancement of technology. And as technology changes, the policies and regulations that affect how technology is used also change. Practically every year, there are new regulations that affect the way certain industries can, or cannot, use technology...or the content gathered from using technology.

For instance, in the medical industry, the increased use electronic medical records (EMRs) in recent years provides an example of how technology has evolved. As this technology became a standard practice, laws protecting a patient’s rights to privacy, such as HIPAA, also have evolved. If you’ve visited a medical facility lately, you’ve seen the HIPAA release forms explaining how personal information will be used, stored, available, etc.

This year, a variety of industries will be affected by changes in regulation, policy and laws. Many of these changes will go into effect on the first day of 2011 and now is the time when people start thinking about how those changes may impact their business.

As a technology provider that keeps your clients current with the technology and resources they need, it is important for you to be aware of new regulations too. Your clients will probably have questions for you and the more you know, the more helpful you can be.

Keeping up with the news in general may seem like a difficult task, much less keeping up with industry news. You don’t need to spend hours reading Medical Economics magazine to stay current on upcoming industry changes (but if you enjoy reading it, who are we to stop you?). Here are some quick ways to stay “in the know” and be sure you can help your customers:

  • Listen to the news on the radio during your commute
  • Subscribe to email newsletters from your clients’ industries and companies
  • Download a news app on your smart phone and browse headlines while standing in line at Starbucks
  • Set up Google alerts on industry terms to have the latest news sent to you instead of having to search for it
  • Don’t be afraid to ask around! Ask clients, coworkers, family members and friends to share their knowledge

Taking just a few minutes each day to keep up with the latest news will make you vastly more knowledgeable—and vastly more valuable to your clients. You may hear a blurb about an upcoming law that will affect one of your clients when listening to talk radio on your drive to work. When you get into the office, take a few minutes to do some research on the law and you might be surprised how much that will help you down the road.

Impress your customers with not only how much you know about telecommunications, but also how much you know about their industry. They may be thrilled that you thought of things before they did...and you may be thrilled by the success it can bring you.

And lastly, don’t forget to keep in touch with your clients. Check in with them on how the technology is helping them comply with the regulations and see if there is any other way you can help. Don’t forget about how TelePacific can help your clients may be able to impress them even more!
