It seems like every company under the sun has a gimmicky customer loyalty program—fly 20 times with us, pay extra fuel charges, meal charges, pillow and blanket charges, and salted peanut charges every time you fly and we’ll give you a free flight (that you already paid for with all the surcharges). Or perhaps it’s the gas station offering you a free medium-sized drink with the purchase of 1,000 price-gouged gallons of premium gas...or better yet, the proverbial free toaster! You can’t help but wonder how many ways they secretly charged you in order to pay for the “free” loyalty gift. But more importantly, was the free toaster really the reason you continued using that company’s services for so long?

Gimmick and Gotcha Free
